Today, when taking English exams or entering a foreign university, it is almost always necessary to write an essay, which often becomes a real test for schoolchildren and students.

If a regular essay is already difficult, then in this case the difficulty increases twofold: you need not only to build an argument, but also to avoid stylistic and grammatical errors in a foreign language. Therefore, it is important to be able to correctly construct your thoughts in English and, of course, not to forget about choosing a good topic.

    Types of essays in English

Essays in English can be conditionally divided into several types. It should be noted that this gradation is very conditional and there are no specific terms that would determine the topic of writing the work.

    • Argumentative Essay

A text in which the author convinces the reader of his point of view on a controversial issue. It is important not only to express an opinion, but to support it with logic, facts, quotes and evidence. The goal is to convince the audience to think and, possibly, accept the position presented.

    • Descriptive Essay

Aims to create a vivid and detailed image of an object, person, place or event. The main goal is to awaken the reader’s emotions and sensory perception through vivid description.

    • Narrative Essay

A story, most often in the first person. It can be a personal story or a fictional plot, the purpose of which is to engage the reader, convey an idea or moral.

    • Expository Essay

Focuses on a clear, logical explanation of the topic. Here, facts, statistics, examples and research are important, not emotions or personal views. The author provides objective information, helping the reader to better understand the subject of discussion.

    • Cause and Effect Essay

Explains what events or factors led to certain results, and how these results affect other processes. The author explores the relationships between causes and effects, identifying patterns and mechanisms of what is happening.

In addition to the above-mentioned varieties, there are other essay formats in the English language, each of which serves to attract the attention of the audience and reveal significant topics. Despite all the diversity of genres, the main goal of any essay remains the same – to clearly and convincingly convey ideas, influence the reader and encourage reflection or discussion.

    Structure of an English essay

Compliance with the structure of an English essay is very important. For example, when completing the Writing task in the IELT exam, this point will be taken into account very strictly. That is why before you start writing, it is important to carefully read the wording of the task and understand what exactly is required of you.

Usually, the structure usually includes the following parts:

    • Introduction – Introduction.
    • Main Body Paragraph 1 – The first paragraph of the main part.
    • Main Body Paragraph 2 – The second paragraph of the main part.
    • Conclusion – Conclusion.

In the introduction, you should rephrase the topic specified in the task and indicate your opinion on it. After this, it is advisable to briefly outline your own position and present two theses that will confirm it.

In the main part of the essay – in the first and second paragraphs – you should expand and argue each of these theses.

The conclusion is the final paragraph in which you summarize, reformulating the main ideas. It can be written in one or two sentences. If necessary and there is space, you can add another short argument to support your point.

It is important to remember: avoid repeating the same idea in different paragraphs. This makes the text superficial and does not demonstrate either the depth of your analysis or your writing skills.
